Frequently Asked Questions

What level of walking is involved in the tour?

The tour involves moderate walking (approximately 3-4 km) over 5-6 hours. We walk at a leisurely pace with frequent stops for food tasting, photography, and rest. The route includes some gentle slopes (especially to Leh Palace) and uneven surfaces in old alleys. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. For those with mobility concerns, we can customize the route.

What safety and hygiene measures are in place for food tasting?

We prioritize food safety and hygiene: 1) We only visit established, clean food establishments, 2) All food is freshly prepared and cooked, 3) Bottled water is provided, 4) Hand sanitizer is available throughout the tour, 5) Vegetarian options are available at all stops, 6) We avoid raw salads and uncooked items, 7) Our guides are trained in basic food safety.

What if I have dietary restrictions or food allergies?

Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or allergies when booking. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and most common dietary needs. Ladakhi cuisine is naturally suitable for many diets as it features lots of vegetables, grains, and dairy. For severe allergies, we'll provide ingredient lists and arrange alternative tastings. Always carry necessary medication.

What should I wear and bring for the tour?

Wear comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing (temperatures can vary), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and carry a small backpack. Bring: camera/phone, personal medications, hand sanitizer, cash for personal purchases, and an appetite! We provide water, but you might want an extra bottle. Avoid heavy meals before the tour to enjoy the tastings.

Can children join the food tour?

Yes, children aged 8 and above are welcome with adult supervision. We offer child-friendly food options and adjust the walking pace. The tour is educational and interactive, making it suitable for curious young minds. For younger children (5-7), we recommend private tours with customized pacing. Infant/toddler strollers are not recommended due to uneven surfaces.

What happens in case of bad weather?

Our tours operate rain or shine! We provide umbrellas for light rain. For heavy rain or unexpected weather conditions, we adjust the itinerary to include more indoor experiences (extended kitchen time, museum visits, café stops). In case of extreme weather making the tour unsafe, we offer rescheduling or full refund. Summer months (June-Sept) typically have stable weather.

Traveler Testimonials

"The food and heritage walk was the highlight of our Ladakh trip! Our guide Tenzin was incredibly knowledgeable about both history and food. The Leh Market tasting introduced us to flavors we'd never experienced, and the home kitchen visit was heartwarming. Cooking Chutagi with a local family and sharing a meal with them felt authentic and meaningful. This tour provided exactly what we wanted - a real taste of Ladakhi culture beyond tourist spots."
- Priya Sharma, Mumbai
"As a food blogger from Europe, I've done many food tours, but this Ladakhi experience was exceptional. The balance between food tasting, cultural education, and hands-on cooking was perfect. Learning about the history of Leh Palace from a local perspective added depth to the experience. The home visit was authentic - no staged performances, just real people sharing their daily life and food traditions. I came away with not just great photos, but genuine connections."
- Marco Rossi, Italy
"We were hesitant about joining a food tour with our 10-year-old, but it turned out to be our family's favorite activity in Ladakh! Our guide made it engaging for all ages. Our son loved making momos in the home kitchen, and we appreciated learning about the cultural significance of each dish. The pace was perfect, with enough breaks and variety to keep everyone interested. The recipe cards we received are now part of our family cooking tradition back home."
